Teach the Fundamentals of BitCoin and Blockchain in a Fun and Engaging Way

Explain how cryptocurrency works under the hood, through our game-based online class

Your students have likely already heard about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the technology called blockchain that powers them. Maybe they trade them on online markets, or are wondering about investing in NFTs.

But do they understand how a blockchain really works under the hood? Is Bitcoin and blockchain really the future of money? What is mining, and why does it require so much energy?

Many people believe that blockchain is a breakthrough technology that could revolutionize economic exchanges, international finance, logistics, and even the art and entertainment industries. Others believe it’s just a lot of hype.

In order to prepare your students for the future, it’s important that they get a firm grasp on the fundamental workings of cryptocurrency and blockchain. This class is about exactly that.

These concepts can be dry and boring when presented poorly. To maximize engagement, we build this class around a video game. Puzzles, exciting motion graphics, and a mysterious storyline all combine to create a fun and immersive learning experience.

Engage your Students with Game-Based Learning

Welcome to Blockchain Battle, a unique experience that takes students deep into the fascinating world of blockchain and cryptocurrency, built around a video game.

Blockchain is a difficult concept to wrap your head around, because of how abstract it all sounds. The underlying concepts in cryptography and computing can be difficult to visualize. When presented in a traditional lecture format, many students find the subject too hard, even boring.

That’s why games are the ideal tool to motivate students to explore, explain the concepts clearly through visualization, and enable the students to experiment with a simulated blockchain.

At Play Curious, we’ve created this innovative online class that combines a game simulation with dynamic videos. The game encourages the students to experiment with a simulated blockchain, as they solve puzzles and communicate with other characters. Watching the videos gives them a deeper understanding of the concepts, the historical context, and how the technology fits within the larger world of finance and industry.

In the class, your students will discover subjects from computer science such as digital signatures and cryptographic but also the history of money, royal plats, and hacking culture.

Adjustable to your Program

Blockchain Battle is a pedagogical tool that can be adjusted to your needs. You can offer it to your students as a separate module that they access on their own schedule from home. Or you could integrate it into an existing program, including as a complementary activity to an existing class.

Our e-learning platform, based on Moodle, allows you to track the progress of your students. For longer classes, we can pair the class with additional activities and projects to give your students even more exposure to the world of blockchain.

If you’d like, we can also accompany your students remotely over videoconference, for additional lectures, Q&A sessions, or project guidance.

Finally, our class is available both in English and French.

Evaluation and Assessment

We offer several forms of evaluation that can be adjusted to your needs.

First, we have multiple-choice quizzes that follow each subject, in order to make sure that the student has followed the course material.

Next, we offer exercises to inspire the students to think critically about the topics presented. These exercises can be self-graded, teacher-graded, or peer-graded.

Finally, if time allows, we suggest a short research project in which each student dives into an important topic related to blockchain, and shares it with their peers in the form of a presentation.

Structure

The class alternates between short videos, usually around 5 minutes long, and levels of our game, which take about 10-15 minutes each.

In the game, students play as Draper, a hacker and cybersecurity expert. Their adventure begins when a mysterious Mr. Smith makes them an offer they can’t refuse- test the security of a new cryptocurrency called Octor.

From that moment on, they use real cryptographic concepts such as hash functions, digital signatures, and encryption in order to test the limits of Octor, detect fraudulent activity and even hack the system for their own ends.

But who is really behind Octor? And what is their true goal?

It is up to them to discover, by exploiting flaws in an ever more sophisticated system.

About Us

We are Play Curious, a startup in southern France with the mission of helping people discover fascinating topics in science and technology through video games.

We believe that games are the ideal medium for inspiring curiosity and enabling people explore otherwise complex topics.

In our other projects, we have addressed the tragedy of the commons, conspiracy theories, and genetic engineering using CRISPR-Cas9.

On a local level, we contribute to the nascent game and tech scene in Perpignan, in particular by hosting regular game jams.

If you’re interested in finding out more about our games and future projects, why don’t you join the Curious Club, our newsletter?

About the Game

Blockchain Battle was originally developed as a video game with the support of Science Animation, France-IOI, Tezos Foundation, and Fondation Blaise Pascal. The game by itself is free and open source, but doesn't include any of the extra course material such as videos as quizzes. You can find it on the France IOI website.

Science Animation created a kit for schools to use Blockchain Battle in their classes. It accompanies the video game with a card game and extra information for teachers. The kit is currently available in French.
